WIN WORK EXPERIENCE AT REAL RADIO!

Future Hits Live

Ever dreamt of a career in radio? We might be able to get you started...

When it comes to careers, being a radio DJ is probably up there among the coolest. However, whether you’ve got dreams of going live with the Top 40 on a Sunday or you fancy your chances as a football talk show host, getting started in the fast-paced world of radio isn’t easy. What better way to get a leg up than to spend some time seeing how it’s done with a top presenter?

Thanks to Source magazine, you could find yourself doing exactly that. We’ve teamed up with Glasgow-based station Real Radio to offer one lucky reader the opportunity to shadow top presenter Paul Harper! This is your chance to see what goes on behind the scenes in radio, ask questions and learn as much as possible in a day.

“I’ll show them the secrets of how I put the show together,” Paul says. “A lot of work goes into it. I’ll show them how I map the show, how it all gets planned, how we pre-record the calls and edit them – it’ll give them a real inside working knowledge into how a radio show goes on air.”

Starting out in hospital radio, former Cults Academy pupil Paul was on the airwaves at Northsound Radio in Aberdeen by the age of 15, proving it’s never too early to start chasing your radio dreams. Today, his show is number one in its time slot on commercial radio in Scotland, providing the best tunes, big name interviews and quality banter.

So what makes life as a radio DJ so great? “I love getting to do all the stuff that not many people get to do,” Paul says. “Since I’ve been on the radio I’ve given away 30 cars and way more than £500,000. I love going to the special stuff too – I did an interview with Bon Jovi in Madrid before the MTV Awards. We were drinking with Kings of Leon in the hotel before too. When I worked at Beat 106 I DJ’d in Ibiza. It’s pretty cool!”

Previous Competitions

Share Your Vision

In 2010, Source ran the VISION competition. This invited young Scots to share their cinematic vision by creating a short film on any subject. Of the many films submitted, ten were shortlisted and screened at a glittering gala premiere event held at the Glasgow Film Theatre, which was hosted by Hollywood writer and member of the judging panel, Mark Millar. The winning short, A Beard Film, saw its creator Ian Robertson win money-can’t-buy prizes including work experience with RDF Media and the Show Racism The Red Card campaign, providing a real boost to his future in film.

Passion for Fashion

In 2009, the Source Passion for Fashion competition saw countless entries from Scotland’s young people, who were tasked with designing an outfit based on the theme of something they were passionate about. The shortlisted ten entries were made into real outfits which were paraded down the catwalk at a stylish event held at the Glasgow University Union. On show were outfits showcasing passions including everything from the Scottish nation to love, classic Hollywood movies, religion and the streets of New York. The winning design, created by 15-year-old Sian Donkers from Benbecula, was inspired by Sian’s passion for current affairs and made entirely of copies of the Financial Times. The unique outfit was displayed in the window of Frasers on Glasgow’s Buchanan Street for one week, while Sian also took home £100 worth of Frasers vouchers and enjoyed a pamper day at Loch Lomond Golf Club, as well as benefitting from a week’s work experience with stylist and fashion editor of Glasgow Herald’s Saturday magazine, Kelly Cooper Barr.
